  • No selection is to be repeated in a subsequent round.


  • Two of the three required Spanish works must be chosen from the suggested list

    José Iturbi – Spanish Favorites at the bottom of this page.


  • The other Spanish work may be of the competitor’s own choice and may be

    composed by a composer from Spain, Mexico, Central or South America or Cuba or may also be chosen from the suggested list José Iturbi -Spanish Favorites at the bottom of the page.

  • If you were a competitor in a previous José Iturbi International Music Competition,
    you may repeat only two (2) major works of 10 minutes or longer and three (3)
    shorter works, for a total of five (5) works. The “Encore” piece played in the evening
    session of the final round must be new for the 2010 competition.

PRELIMINARY ROUND – 24 pianists

A program of no less than 17 minutes and no more than 20 minutes which must include:

  1. A work by Johann Sebastian Bach. No transcriptions.

  2. A Nocturne by *Chopin.

  3. An Étude by Liszt, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Debussy, Prokofiev, Stravinsky,

    Bartok, Ligeti and/or a Toccata by Czerny, *Schumann, Ravel, Khachaturian

    or Prokofiev.

SEMI-FINAL ROUND – 12 pianists

A program of no less than 42 minutes and no more than 45 minutes which must include:    

  1. A complete Sonata or large work by Beethoven, Schubert, *Schumann or Brahms

  2. A Prelude, Mazurka or Waltz by *Chopin

  3. * One Spanish work  

  4. The balance of the allotted time may be filled with a Prelude by Debussy, a work by Ravel or piece of the contentant's choice.

FINAL ROUND – 6 pianists

A program of 50 minutes split into 30 minutes in the afternoon and 20 minutes in the evening.

Afternoon program of no less than 27 minutes and no more than 30 minutes which must include:

  1. A work or group of pieces by Rachmaninoff and/or Liszt including transcriptions

  2. * One Spanish work.

  3. Balance of allotted time is to be filled with applicant’s choice of repertoire.

Evening program of no less than 17 minutes and no more than 20 minutes which must include:

  1. A Gershwin work or song transcribed by Gershwin, Earl Wild or the contestant

  2. * One Spanish work

  3. A work by *Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff or Brahms

  4. One virtuoso “Encore” piece.


  5. * in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert Schumann and Frederic Chopin
